Stuttgart AI – AI Guru on an Excursion

Namaste! Yesterday was traveling day. I attended Stuttgart AI. As a freelancer, I am striving towards a proper balance between networking with great people and doing excellent Artificial Intelligence projects. You know… for me life is all about learning and teaching. And I usually learn a lot from people and projects.

I got invited by a very good friend to attend Stuttgart AI. This was the perfect opportunity for me to spend some time in that special city in Swabia. Stuttgart AI is a strong and growing community of AI enthusiasts. Their goal is to discover Artificial Intelligence in and around the Swabian metropolis. And I was happy to attend their second meetup, which was thankfully hosted by KI group.

Two talks at Stuttgart AI showed one thing: AI is a growing field.

The community attended two great talks which showed that AI is alive and flourishing.

Dr. Benedikt Koehler (CEO @DataLion) made clear that Foursquare data is perfect for Artificial Intelligence applications. Foursquare is all about local search and discovery. It helps you to discover cities with personalizer recommendations. And of course, it generates lots and lots of data, which can be used for analysis and AI applications.

Fernando Germán Torales Chorne (Development Engineer in Deep Learning @Bosch) talked about Autonomous Parking research at Bosch. I like today’s situation. There is a lot to learn and a lot to apply. And now Deep Learning makes its way into the car. Object detection, street sign recognition, road scene segmentation… It is beautiful to see the wide range of applicability.

Inspiration galore. That is why it is important to exchange ideas.

The great thing is – I am repeating myself – I met many AI enthusiasts in Swabia and discussed a lot about my favorite topic Deep Learning. The interest is very high and I am very confident that Deep Learning is going to be around for quite a while. I get this feeling regularly from people all around the nation.

In the late evening, I left Stuttgart in a very inspired state of mind. And that is an understatement. On the night-train back – did I mention that I like doing AI research on trains? – I decided to go deeper into a special topic: Deep Reinforcement Learning. A while ago I wrote a German article on Doom, Deep Learning and Indoor Navigation. Now it is time to do some more research. Thanks to modern times – the technology is so very accessible – I got a first prototype up and running in 160 lines of code and after 2 hours of work. I love 2018!

What is next? Bavaria!

Small world. In December I left Porsche Digital Lab Berlin. And in January I went back to Stuttgart to see what is going on. Next goal: Propagating Deep Learning in Bavaria! I will talk at Wuerzburg Web Week. And I am organizer of Würzburg-Deep-Learning-Meetup. Feel free to meet me there.

Stay in touch.

I hope you liked the article. Why not stay in touch? You will find me at LinkedIn, XING and Facebook. Please add me if you like and feel free to like, comment and share my humble contributions to the world of AI. Thank you!
