Last week I had the pleasure of accompanying two colleagues from BASF to LogiMAT. LogiMAT is a German fair about everything that has to do with logistics. It was good for me to see the current state of German art. And I have high hopes for AI!
Digitization in Germany. A huge potential.
Recently I checked the statistics page of Germany’s Bundesagentur für Arbeit. This agency knows everything about employment. If I got the numbers right, in Germany we got around 2-3 million people working in driving and logistics. If we just think about autonomous vehicles and Amazon’s fully-automatic warehouses we know: Disruption could hit very hard!
Do not get me wrong. I am not the John-the-Revelator-type. Not running around telling everyone „the end is nigh!“. Everything is going to be great. Artificial Intelligence is going to be a changing force. And the degree of uneasiness during the changes I expect is something we could still influence.

Ten halls and three mentions of AI.
LogiMAT took place in 10 huge halls and provided everything that the logistics-heart loves. As I wandered around, I paid close attention to two things: What are potential use-cases and which use-cases have already been implemented with AI technology.
This is the usual perspective of someone who is immersed deeply into a field of technology. As someone who has a hammer, I see nails everywhere. Metaphorically speaking. I strongly believe that a huge portion of those nails is not worth hitting on their heads. On the other hand, there is a lot of nails that would yield excellent results.
In the end, it turned out that AI did not get mentioned that often. At least not as often as I expected. This is a good thing. Because to me, it showed: Logistics is a domain that has quite a huge potential for growth.
